Together
I discovered something so beautiful today that I truly believe this to be one of my most heartfelt piece of writing.
I wrote this after an evening spent listening more than speaking. I recently met with a friend who talked about her marriage. She loves her husband. However, both of them are at a vulnerable stage in their life at the moment. They are together, yet living apart. Things are becoming increasingly difficult, yet she spoke of him with a tenderness that felt almost old-world. What moved me was not her sorrow, but her certainty.
In every sentence, she spoke as a wife, not as a woman negotiating love. When I came back home, her words stayed with me. She talked about something that is not common in today’s world. This poem was written in the strength of her devotion and the silence of the night. It carries what she could not quite say aloud. It bears her longing to be protected, to be consulted, to build a life side by side, even when life insists on distance.
I did not ask for a life of ease,
Or silks and gold to aim to please.
I asked for a man—steadfast and kind,
A tiger’s courage, a gentle mind.
A man who guards with patient grace,
Who makes the world a safer place.
Who fights for me, not against my say,
Who chooses peace at the close of day.
I wanted a husband who walks with me,
In small routines and destiny.
Who laughs with me at morning’s start,
And rests at night upon my heart.
Not one who lives a life apart,
But builds a home through shared heart.
Who seeks my voice in plans we make,
In every road we choose to take.
I am a wife who tends the flame—
The quiet joys, the household name.
Yet even so, my worth is seen,
In counsel sought, in space between.
I wished for love that does not rule,
But honors marriage as sacred school.
For big decisions, small ones too,
We stand as one, not me and you.
This is the man a traditional wife knows—
Not loud in might, but steady in oaths.
A tiger, yes, in strength and care,
Who leads with love—and meets me there.
